Foundation – Isaac Asimov
A sprawling, multi-generational exploration of politics and religion.
I’ll be honest – I don’t remember many details of this book. But I really enjoyed the experience of reading it. There’s just something about this kind of science fiction. The only thing is, don’t get attached to any of the characters because they won’t stick around for long. This was one of the first science fiction books I ever read and I definitely want to continue the series.
Perfect for: Lovers of worldbuilding
The Secret Race: Inside the Secret World of the Tour de France- Tyler Hamilton and Daniel Coyle
A deep dive into what it takes to be a top preforming professional cyclist.
I didn’t know a thing about the world of professional cycling before I read this book. It was well written, captivating, and deeply personal. Tyler Hamilton has a lot to share; he goes into his experiences with performing enhancing drugs and details of his relationship with Lance Armstrong.
Perfect for: Anyone even remotely interested in cycling
Eating Animals – Jonathan Safran Foer
A sobering look at farming and fishing practices in the United States.
This book changed my life. It wasn’t exactly enjoyable to read, though. Educating myself on what goes on in factory farms was a harsh but necessary reality to face.
Perfect for: Anyone who shops at a grocery store
Circe – Madeline Miller
A beautiful retelling of the witch Circe from Greek mythology.
I love humans and so does Circe. Circe doesn’t exactly fit in with her fellow gods and goddesses. She yearns for human connection, despite being hurt by them again and again. The book strays from the original mythology quite a bit, but that’s kind of the point.
Perfect for: Introverts
I, Robot – Isaac Asimov
A collection of short stories in a world where humans and robots are intricately bound.
Although completely made up, these stories feel entirely real. This is mystery, drama, thriller, romance, and philosophy all wrapped up together. At it’s core, this is a book about the nature of human connection. I think about this book at least once a week. Genius.
Perfect for: EVERYONE
